The Gauteng department says, more than 10,000 grade ones and eight pupils have applied for the 2018 academic year using the online application portal.
Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi says technicians have now dealt with all minor issues reported by parents. The website crashed several times as it couldn’t handle a lot of users at the same time.
“When we were doing it with paper at the beginning of the year we’ve had to collate paper until June and then start, then to say we need an extra teacher or an extra desk.”
The system was launched in Orange Farm on Tuesday
“But now , I know by the end of this business today, your Four ways area , Centurion area will be overloaded. So its confirmation that I need to build more schools in those areas”
Lesufi has asked the parents to stick to the application period that ends in June to avoid late applications.
Placement period for pupils is set for between 29 September and parents will be provided a seven-day grace period to accept or appeal allocations.
“Those that come in January and apply late, unfortunately, they affect the entire process. That is why we had difficulties and challenges of placing. This year alone in January we had 80,000 people that wanted their children to be placed.”
The 2018 online enrolment system is faster and an easier tool for parents to use, said Lesufi.
